Legislative Yuan Confirms Chang Po-ya as Head of Central Election Commission

On November 12th, the Legislative Yuan confirmed Chang Po-ya’s nomination as chairperson of the Central Election Commission (CEC) with the support of the majority of the legislators present and voting. Chang will serve as Chairperson of the CEC until 2013.

 

All DPP legislators boycotted the vote, while KMT legislators and independent legislators participated in the confirmation vote. In the end, of 123 legislators, 71 voted, and Chang’s appointment was confirmed by a vote of 69 to 2.

 

Chang stated that, as CEC Chairperson, she would be fair and impartial in overseeing the elections.

 

Chang is 68 years old with an M.D. from Kyorin University, Japan. She has previously served as Chiayi City Mayor, legislator, Health Minister, Interior Minister, and Governor of Taiwan Province. She has always been a non-partisan politician known for her neutrality and moderation.
