President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) recently kept publicizing that home-coming investments from the Mainland reached nearly NT$700 billion (approx. US$23 billion). However, when interpellated at the Legislative Finance Committee on November 18, Lin Chuan-neng (林全能), Deputy Economics Minister, candidly admitted that so far, home-coming enterprises from the Mainland had repatriated no funds for their investments in Taiwan, eliciting public uproar.
Yesterday, the Presidential Office, Cabinet and DPP spend the whole day trying to put out the fire over the disputes, explaining the matter through Line, on their Facebook pages, and in a press conference. In a rare move, President Tsai Ing-wen herself even clarified the disputes three times in a single day, stressing that it was the honest-to-God truth that Taiwan was experiencing an “explosive growth in investment, with Taiwan businessmen on the Mainland returning home and investing one after another.” However, Tsai changed her tune, saying “the government had approved investment projects that home-coming enterprises had applied to conduct, with an aggregated value at over NT$700 billion.”
