The Executive Yuan (Cabinet) announced in a statement that Liu Ching-chung (劉慶中), deputy chairman of the Hakka Affairs Council (HAC), would be the new HAC chairman, filling the post left vacant by Huang Yu-cheng (黃玉振), who resigned earlier this month.
Liu is a Pingtung-born Hakka, a sub-ethnic group of Han Chinese. Liu earned his doctorate in education administration from the University of Illinois. While serving as president of National Pingtung University of Education, Liu founded a Hakka research center at the university, promoting the study and development of Hakka culture.
The Executive Yuan also stated that in the future, Liu would further nurture Hakka youth talents and encourage them to preserve and carry forward their ethnic heritage, adding that Liu also planned to promote Hakka studies. Chung Wan-mei (鍾萬梅), currently HAC vice chairman, would be promoted to deputy chairman, the same source added.
