Kao Koong-lian (高孔廉), vice chairman of the Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF), has tendered his resignation, citing personal career plans. Kao is slated to leave office on February 6, according to media reports.
Kao, 69, was appointed as SEF secretary-general when President Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) took office in 2008. Over the past five and a half years, the two sides of the Strait have inked 19 cross-Strait agreements, including the cross-Strait Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA).
Kao, a veteran of cross-Strait affairs for more than 20 years, has served in several important government posts, including Vice Chairman of the Mainland Affairs Council (MAC), and Minister of the Mongolian and Tibetan Affairs Commission.
Presidential Office stated yesterday that President Ma had not yet decided who would be appointed to replace Kao.
